We are happy to publish the third and final report of our research project “Mobile Data Collection Opportunities in Sub Saharan Africa“. The project ran through 2012 and was funded by France-Telecom Orange.

Foroba Blon and our Radio Platform for Citizen Journalists

This week, a group of us are back in Mali, on a field trip for the Foroba Blon project, where we’ll be deploying the first prototype of our radio platform, testing it, and gathering feedback for the continuation of the project.

When I describe the platform and the project I often get the same questions, so I thought I’d write an FAQ.

Mobile Web Ghana Starts Third Training Program

Mobile Web Ghana‘s bi-annual mobile entrepreneurship training course kicked off earlier this week. After two successful courses, which yielded many very promising projects now being developed, we’re now embarking on another exciting month of learning, brainstorming and developing. Twenty new trainees will follow the courses given by our trainers on user experience, voice apps, mobile websites, SMS, native apps and mobile business – everything you need to know in order to start a successful venture in mobile entrepreneurship.

Farmerline Wins Mobile Web Ghana’s App Competition

Mobile Web Ghana is pleased to announce the results of its mobile Web applications competition, held at the end of each training session. At the conclusion of the most recent training, Farmerline, an agricultural information system, was selected as winner and the team behind it was awarded $600 to pursue its path towards turning the application into a commercial product.

Representatives from the IPI and VOICES project partners (Hans Akkermans, Anna Bon and Chris van Aart from VU, and Mary Allen from Sahel Eco), and I have just returned to Bamako after a trip to the cities of Ségou and Tominian, where we visited two of the radio stations with whom we are working.

The U.S. Department of State has announced the West and Central Africa winners of the Apps4Africa: Climate Challenge in Durban, South Africa on December 7, 2011. The third place was awarded to Alloysius Attah and Emmanuel Owusu Addai, who developed the winning application, FarmerLine, during Mobile Web Ghana‘s training programme last September.

Mobile Web Ghana organises Mobile Entrepreneurs Congress

On December 10th, Mobile Web Ghana is holding its first conference, Mobile Entrepreneurs Congress, in Accra.

Following the mobile industry’s initial boom as most of the population became owners of mobile phones, the second phase of its evolution is starting right now with the fusion of the Web with mobile phones. Apps, smartphones, mobile websites, SMS and voice services, and mobile entrepreneurship are all components of this second phase, and the congress will explore them in the context of Africa. Through presentations by some of the main actors in the mobile industry, as well as directed discussions within the audience, it will provide a unique insight into the global and local mobile landscapes.

A month after the second Mobile Entrepreneurship training session in Accra, the participants met again to compete for the best project developed during the session. Like for the previous challenge, back in March, each team was asked to pitch their idea in front of a panel of judges. This time, Vincent Chinedu Okonkwo – software engineer and Bernard Adjei, both from Esoko, reviewed the various projects and gave the teams feedback. Most of these projects will be rolling out in 2012, so watch out for them!

Farmerline (from Alloysius Attah and Emmanuel Owusu Addai): a system that furnishes the stakeholders (farmers and investors) with agricultural information to improve productivity and increase income.
